Risk Factors Of Male Infertility

A child is the greatest blessing in life. To give birth to your own little one and watching every stage of its growth is indeed the most beautiful part of life. There are certain couples who aren't lucky enough to get a child, which is mainly due to infertility. In fact, almost 15 percent of couples are infertile. Infertility is the inability to conceive a child even after attempting for a year. Such a situation can be very much depressing and might spoil your zest for life.

Over a third of these cases comprises of male infertility. Male infertility occurs when the sperm does not function properly, or when the sperm count is very low. It can also occur at times when the sperm delivery or the mobility of the sperm is affected. Infertility was definitely a case with no hopes, several decades back. But now, we live in an era where undesirable conditions can be prevented and even cured. There are various treatments available to overcome infertility. Yet, it is always best to be aware of the risk factors of the condition so that you can fight it easier.

Risk Factors of Male Infertility

Age: The testosterone level in the blood shows a declination with age, in almost all men despite being healthy. This decline may start from the age of 30. After the age of 30, the testosterone level decreases by 1% every year. So the chances of infertility are more in a 35-year-old man than in a 25-year-old.

Smoking: Well, smoking is indeed injurious to health and even spoils your chances of having a lovely little baby! Smoking results in a decrease of the sperm motility and in the percentage of normal sperm cells.

Obesity: Obesity leads to a significant decline in the number of normal motile sperm. The semen quality of men who have excess fat in the suprapubic area and the thighs will be poor.

Consumption of Alcohol and caffeinated drinks: Such drinks affect the reproductive process in every level. Studies also show that men who have more than 3 cups of tea and coffee daily might succumb to infertility.

Scrotal temperature: The scrotal temperature can decide the semen quality. An increase in scrotal temperature will result in poor semen quality.  Avoid driving continuously for 2 hours or more in a stretch or wearing tight trousers. All these can lead to an increase in scrotal temperature.

What are the types of Male Infertility Treatments?

Surgery: Many men undergo surgery to break out their male infertility. Varicocele is one such surgical intervention. It is an enlargement of veins with the skin bag that holds the testicles. This condition causes low sperm production, decreased quantity of sperms. Men who have defects in Vas deferens are advised to undergo surgery. Vasectomy Reversal can also be done with surgical intervention in order to get back their fertility. Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA), Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) and Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) are other surgical interventions for infertility.

Medication/Counseling: Most of the Coitus problems arise from the condition called erectile dysfunction and another predominant condition is premature ejaculation. Both the issues can be treated with proper medication and counseling.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): ART is a windfall for the infertility problems. Both male and female acquire parenthood with the help of ART. Collecting sperm from the male partner and delivering into the female uterus happens in IVF. In IVF procedure, the sperm is either collected manually or through surgery. In ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) method, the collected sperm is also used.

Treating infections: When a man has an infection as the key cause of infertility, then the infections can be treated with a course of antibiotics. Once the infection is washed out, then other measures will be taken to enable reproduction.

Hormonal treatment: Men who face infertility due to the hormonal imbalance then they are treated with hormonal treatment to bring back their fertility. Hormonal treatments are mostly administered in the forms of pills and injections.

Lifestyle changes: Smoking, consuming alcohol and drug addiction will majorly affect the fertility phenomenon. So, a fertility specialist will advise the man to stop the ill-habits and advise to consume more vitamins and do exercises.
